Frozen Theme Bento

Today it actually feels like Elsa lives in the Midwest. All week it has been cold rainy, snowy, and downright awful. However, my grandchild has been singing “Let it Snow” all week long. She’s even asked me if we will have a white Christmas. I smile and just think to myself I hope not. However, her cute smile deserves a Frozen Bento.

To Create the Elsa sandwich I first printed a clipper I found online. I laid wax paper on top of the printed clip art use my edible markers to trace the outline. You can also use a pencil. Later I used my frosting tip to trace over the outline. I placed it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes, took it out and a slice of bread on outline. Gently lifted the bread slice to reveal the transfer of the image. It was that simple.

Mermaid Lunch

Online schooling has presented challenges that our family had to make adjustment to accommodate the needs of our kids.  Sometime kids can be overlooked when it comes to how Covid and quarantine has place stress on them. I like to infuse each day with special moments. This is the beauty of making bento lunch. They give parent a chance to make their child smile. I like to incorporate the kids interest in my lunches. In my lunches I like to include cliparts for two reasons. The first reason is it would be time consuming to try and create these details with food. The second is I look at this like creating art using to mediums. Adding clip art details add a host of possibility when making creative lunches. This lunch was totally dedicated to my granddaughter. She is all about unicorns, princess and mermaids. She loves ramen noodles, so while noodles cooked I added a drop of blue food coloring to the water. It created a much darker color than I originally expected. The noodles gave the p...

Hello Kitty Lunch

Over the weekend my granddaughter was so hurt that her aunt bought a Hello Kitty pencil for herself and unicorn pencil for her. She pouted, “ but I Love Hello Kitty too.” We had to talk to her about what it means to have gratitude. These are hard, but needed lessons.   Gratitude, thankfulness, or gratefulness, from the Latin word gratus ‘pleasing, thankful’, is a feeling of appreciation felt by and/or similar positive response shown by the recipient of kindness, gifts, help, favors, or other types of generosity, towards the giver of such gifts. I love my grandchildren and want to give them everything, but without nurturing gratitude they will end up spoiled and ungrateful. As a parent (and grandparent) teaching our children to be have gratitude is actually molding them into kind human beings.  I ncluded in lunch: 🥪 kitten - raspberry jam sandwich 🥮 heart shape pound cake 🥣 strawberry yogurt 🥒 cut cucumbers 🧆 Snack: yogurt cover raisins  S trawberries Direct...

You're Going To Hear Me ROAR!

Get ready for a ROAR-some good theme lunch idea. My granddaughter loves dinosaurs and this week I wanted to surprise her with this above and beyond dinosaur bento. Planning this bento made me think about how often girls are told dinosaur are for boys. As a teacher and mom, it was always important to me to emphasis to students that toys are gender neutral. The most beautiful thing about being a child is the gift of imagination. Which to me nurtures confidence and the ability to think outside the box when it comes to problem solving. I remember once taking by granddaughter to an event at the local mall that had a balloon artist creating different twisted balloon shapes for kids. When it was my granddaughter turn, he asked if she would like a tiara, or flower? Which is what all the girls requested. My grandbaby proudly said, “NO, I want a dinosaur.” Inspired by lasandri.tumblr.com. I used a cookie cutter and food coloring to create dinosaurs with wheat bread. The spikes are simple...
