Mermaid Lunch

Online schooling has presented challenges that our family had to make adjustment to accommodate the needs of our kids. Sometime kids can be overlooked when it comes to how Covid and quarantine has place stress on them. I like to infuse each day with special moments. This is the beauty of making bento lunch. They give parent a chance to make their child smile. I like to incorporate the kids interest in my lunches. In my lunches I like to include cliparts for two reasons. The first reason is it would be time consuming to try and create these details with food. The second is I look at this like creating art using to mediums. Adding clip art details add a host of possibility when making creative lunches.

This lunch was totally dedicated to my granddaughter. She is all about unicorns, princess and mermaids. She loves ramen noodles, so while noodles cooked I added a drop of blue food coloring to the water. It created a much darker color than I originally expected. The noodles gave the prefect ocean backdrop. All it needed now was a touch of cut carrots to create ocean floor. The Chicken nuggets create my school of fish. I just added red peppers as fish tail and mixed soy sauce with flour to create eye dots.

Included in lunch:

Ramen noodles

Carrots

Chicken nuggets

String beans and corn

Mandarin oranges

Half of a cut hotdog

Native American Heritage bento box

On August 3, 1990,  President of the United States   George H. W. Bush  declared the month of November as  National American Indian Heritage Month , thereafter commonly referred to as  Native American Heritage Month . The bill read in part that “the President has authorized and requested to call upon Federal, State and local Governments, groups and organizations and the people of the United States to observe such month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities”.  As a teacher I make a point to introduce students to the true heritage of America. We are fortunate to live in a country where many cultures are celebrated (Wikipedia). This Bento box Was inspired by Eclectic Lamb. I researched online to find markings Native American markings and used it to write on sugar cookies. For the Wampum belt, My granddaughter does not like beans, do I tried to place as little as possible. Sides included in this lunch was Poppable chips Embellished wi...

Kitten and Mitten Lunch

The ancient Japanese tradition of packing lunch in a bento box, a decorative container with small compartments, has now become mainstream. We love bento box lunches because the compartments help control portion sizes and they are great for kids too.  However, creating these amazing lunches is not always so easy. I envy the Pinterest lunches with perfectly shaped animal characters and flowers made from meat. These lunches are healthy and beautiful. I consider myself creative and wanted to incorporate some of these bento ideas into my lunches. The first thing you must have as a novice is rice molds and nori cutters. This made things so much easier to create cute animals and facial expression. Putting it all together still was challenging. I never used nori before, but my grandchildren eat it all the time at their home. My bento box comes in already sized compartments and adding lettuce to surround characters was not easy. For this lunch it was easier not to include the lettuce t...

Sesame Street Lunchable

Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street. In 2020, Sesame Street  celebrated its 51st anniversary. Yup, that means 51 years of singing, dancing, rhyming, and learning ABCs and 123s with Big Bird and the gang. It's one of the few programs I can tell my grandchildren that I watched this as a little girl too. Over the years Sesame Street evolved with technology and community issues. Today I wanted this lunch to include all of our favorite  Sesame Street  characters.   Ingredients: crackers, salami, white cheese , cheddar cheese, yogurt, blue food coloring, edible google eyes, one cookie, nori, broccoli, smiley face potato fries, and mandarin orange. Directions:  1. cook  smiley face potato fries as directed and add to bento box. 2. print a clipart of the character Ernie faces. Cut is out and stick to orange using glue stick ONLY.  This wont run or leek into the orange and will be removed with peel before eating...
